Should You Repair Or Replace Your Roof?

Posted on

Roofing damage is something that cannot be ignored or even put off until you have spare money. It's something that needs to be attended to as soon as you spot a problem. If you aren't sure if your roof will handle another repair or if it should be replaced altogether, read on for information to help guide you in your decision.

Age Of Your Roof

If your roof is older than 20 years, you may be better off replacing your entire roof, as you will probably need to do so in the near future anyways. Roofs last anywhere from 20 - 30 years, sometimes more, but it may not be in the best of shape. If your roof is less than 20 years, repairing the roof may be in your best interest, depending on the type of damage that you are repairing.

Cost Of The Repair

If you have a minor issue that isn't going to cost you much money, make the repair - which may even be something you can do yourself. If however, the repair cost is nearly the same cost as replacing the entire roof, have the roof replaced altogether to ensure that you won't have any future problems either. This can repair whatever roofing issue you had and look around at potential other issues to ensure you don't run into another problem later down the road.

Shape Of The Roof

If your roof is in bad shape, such as the shingles are warped, or the shingles have mold and mildew growing on them, or if the shingles are lacking the asphalt granules that protect your roof and home, it's best to have the entire roof replaced. Those shingles are in too bad of shape to do any good for your roof and it wouldn't be long before you end up with water leaking into your home. Have your roof replaced.

Curb Appeal

If you are planning on leaving your home soon, you can repair your roof to give your home some extra curb appeal and to add value to your home as well. Although, if you are planning on leaving it anyway and aren't worried about any of this, you can simply make a repair rather than spending the extra money on replacement costs.

If you aren't sure if you should repair or replace your roof, hire a professional roofing contractor to take a good look at your roof. They can inspect your roof and then give their professional opinion on what should be done to help with your decision.
